Save Money On Groceries – lower cost protein!

Once you start living a healthy bodybuilding lifestyle and consuming more high quality nutritious foods, you’re going to run into one problem… Your grocery bill goes up!

Unfortunately, following a healthy muscle building diet is a heck of a lot more expensive than eating an “average” diet that’s based mostly around processed foods. The higher costs of quality meats, fish, poultry, fruits, and vegetables certainly has an impact on ones ability to stick to with a solid bodybuilding eating plan. Especially if you are on a limited budget.

One of the more expensive bodybuilding foods is protein, especially lean red meat. And for a serious bodybuilder lean red meat is a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals. And despite what you may have heard, lean red meat is actually very healthy. When you trim off the excess fat; foods like beef, pork, bison, etc. are on par and sometimes even leaner than poultry.

And I have a simple tip that you can use to Instantly Save 25% Or More the next time you buy meat at the grocery store.

Now I have to tell you up front this tip is so simple that you’ll probably say;
“Duh, that’s just common sense Lee…”
But despite the fact that it’s common sense, you’d be surprised at how many people DON’T follow it.

To give you a real world example of this, I was at the grocery store the other day and they had eye of round beef steaks for $13.99 a kilogram. And an eye of round beef roast was only $8.99 a kilogram. So I literally saved $5 a kilogram (approx. $2 per pound) off my meat simply by cutting the steaks up myself.

It takes about 60 seconds to chop up a roast and make your own steaks, so it’s a simple no brainer money saving tip that you can use for your next BBQ!

  • Also, consider fishing. Not only can it be a great recreational activity, but many of the “less desirable” fish can be kept in large enough numbers to feed large gatherings. For example, in my area walleye, whitefish and channel catfish each have a daily keep limit of five while common carp and shad have no limit. Most of these are great tasting (though not all) and reasonably good fighters for a good time catching them. All of them contain plenty of good protein and fatty acids.

Check you local regs and ask around at your bait shops. One day of good fishing can net you a week or more of excellent protein, for “free.”

    Hey Lee,
That’s a great tip…I guess I didn’t realize that the roast is the same cut of meat as the steak that is already cut up. Isn’t a roast a lot tougher than a pre-cut steak? I guess I don’t know enough about the different cuts of meat.
    thanks!

For sure, fishing and hunting provide great sources of inexpensive protein. Plus it’s a lot of fun as well… 😉

    Meat is meat…
I actually find that when you cut up a fresh roast yourself and then put it on the grill it’s actually more tender than if you had bought the steaks pre-cut. I think this is because the meat will retain more of it’s natural juices for a longer period of time as a roast compared to when it’s pre-cut into thin steaks.

    Hey Lee,

I am vegetarian. The only Poultry thing I eat is eggs. My grocery bills are just right. I am taking Whey protein shakes, 3 per day with combined intake of 63 grams from shakes only. I eat cottage cheese, half a cup daily. I am also eating the omelette recipe you shared on YouTube with 5 eggehites and 1 egg yolk. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do to substitute meat.

    Thanks man 🙂

I’ve never been to BC before so I have no idea what stores or markets are there. But if you just ask around locally I’m sure you’ll get some references.

The main thing you need to focus on is consuming at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight daily. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you need to make sure you are getting at least 150 grams of protein daily.

  • Lee,
Costco is the place to buy your meats. We eat a lot ground turkey and chicken. We buy in bulk, break it into baggie size and freeze. That way there is always protein available.
My wife can’t eat beef so I only eat it occasionally. Might be a good investment to purchase a roast and cut it up. It would last me quite a while.
    Thanks for the tip.
