Lee Hayward's Live Ustream Bodybuilding Show

Tonight I’m going to do things a little different than usual…

Normally I like to take Q and A live via our chat window during the show itself. Now this works out great for those of you who can tune in Live and watch the show every Thursday night.

However, there are a lot of folks who live in other parts of the world (i.e. Europe, Asia, Australia, etc.) who like to download the replays of the show the next day. It’s cool that they can still catch the show this way, but obviously they can’t ask their questions LIVE on the show.

For the benefit of everyone (regardless if you can make the live show or not), I’m going to be taking your questions and topics that you’d like to have discussed on the show via the comments section below. Then later tonight I’ll simply go through all the comments in the order that I receive them.

So if you want to get your questions answered, be sure to post it ASAP in the comments section right below, I’ll be covering them all on a first posted, first answered basis!

Then after you post your question below head on over to http://www.LeeHayward.com/tv to watch the show live for 9:00 pm Eastern Time, or if you can’t make it, then be sure to download the replay after I post it up tomorrow.

  • Go ahead and post your questions and topics you’d like to discuss on tonights show right here in the comments section. I know it’s kind of “last minute”, but I’ll be taking these questions here *first* during the show tonight. If we have time afterwards I’ll then switch and take Live Q and A through our video chat window as well.

Hello lee, I am one of those who follow your shows regularly but not live as I live in England and the timings don’t work out. One thing that no-one ever talks about are the detrimental effects of smoking in terms of limiting muscle building gains. I managed to kick the cigarettes a while back but I know of guys who train hard but are moderate to heavy smokers. Improving muscular physique should be a great motivator for giving up cigarettes, i suppose my question is in percentage terms how much do you think a moderate smoker (say 5 to 10 a day) is limiting their gains?

  • sean

    Hey Lee.
I’d like some tips on variety for trap training. I train at home so all i have is db’s, BB, rack and bench.
    Cheers.

    Hi Lee,
Mate there are differing views out there regarding how often to work a particular part of the body. Some programmes say don’t work out a body part more often than once a week. Others say you should do 3 or 4 full body workouts a week.
What do you think is best for hypertrophy.
    many thanks – andy

    Hey Lee,,
could you please please please tell us how to get a V-shaped body..
i mean you all talk about bulking up and massing muscles up, but what am really looking for is how to make the great V-Shape body.. not the SQUARE MUSCLE shape,, please tell us what kind of exercises shall we focus on and how many times per week and how many reps per exercise..
    thank you very much..

  • Mark

    Lee,
What are some tips for people to gain weight? Eat more or work out a lot or both? What are work outs to do and which one do i stay away from (ie. no cardio, or only once a week)?
    Thanks,
    Mark

hey i have always wondered when people say work to failure to build muscle do they mean work to failure in your last set or in all sets, because when i try to work to failure in all sets i struggle to maintain my rep range.

  • Derek

I have a very hectic week for five days ( some day shift some nights kinda screwy) working 13.5 to 14 hour day at a mill in a mine out side of saskatoon sask. Than i get 5 day s off. should i be doing total bodies or try to do a 1 or 2 work outs on my day on and really giver good on my days off? iam not worried about cardio because i do lots of stairs, shoveling ect at work. my goal are to lean out more so than get huge.

  • Cedric

Hey Lee, I was just wondering if it was alright to mix creatine mono with NO2? Will it be effective or a waste? Is it alright to mix supplements together?

  • Danny D

    Hey Lee,
How can I lose that stubborn fat?

    hey lee

just started the 1000 calorie workout challenge on monday. i am eating about 1100 calories on the day of my workouts (as outlined by the diet manual) but i am gassig out on my workouts. how do i battle that?

  • Brad

hey lee, have been following you for over two years now and you;ve been a great help, thanks!! I plan on competing in my first body building competition within the next year. One question. a few years back i got a shoulder injury that no hinders me to have symmetry in my shoulders. Will that affect my ability to win competitions?

  • John

My question comes in 2 parts. First, do you recommend altering a workout routine every 8 to 12 weeks in order to shock your system? Secondly, what type of routine would you recommend? For example, increased reps with lighter weight, decreased reps with heavier weight, strip sets, etc.

    Thanks

  • James Smith

Hey Lee I was wondering how Trish and Your training/nutrition differ?
The reason is I have been working out for five years and in the past two I have started to bring my nutrition around. So I have a good basic knowledge of diet/nutrition for me and am happy with where I am at and going. But my girlfriend has just started and is a blank slate. Garbage nutrition and poor exercise plan, so how much of what I do can she adopt for nutrition mainly and also exercise. I follow what you and Vince Del Monte say about meals throughout the day 6 per and have Dave Ruel’s cookbook. Thanks Lee

Hey Lee, I have been working out for about a year now and my strength gains have been great (doubled my weight in most excersices), but I do not look much bigger and have only gained 6.5 lbs since I started. Is a different approach to working out required for strength gains and for just packing on mass?

P.S. When I began my body fat percentage was really low, so my lack in weight gains is clearly not from the losing body fat weight.

Perhaps it’s because you aren’t getting enough calories per pound of body weight. 15-18 cal/lbs is a good place to start and see where that brings you. Also working around the 8-12 rep range will be better for gaining size than low reps which are for strenght gains. hope that helps

Hello I would like to know how to increase the explosiveness in the lower body especially the glutes.

  • Gphill

    Hello lee!
If possible, I would like you to discuss a ab workout
Program that best targets the abdominal within
An hour workout! My question? Can you discuss a fast paced developed
Workout that targets the ab area. If you can explain the best routine for this.
I read all your blogs, seen your vidal and I need a direct hard ab workout.
Thanks lee and by the way, you are doing a great job,
It does not make a difference in age, but it makes a difference
In health, feeling, and attitude to look strong, feel strong and confident,it’s all about doing your best and being your best! This us what you do!

Hey Lee, whats the best way to manipulate your diet and caloric intake when transitioning from a cutting phase to a bulking phase? becuase i tend to find that when i increase my calories after weeks of cutting, i find it difficult to keep off the fat.

I am an Intermediate weightlifter and I feel like I am at a Plateau in my weightlifting. I split up my workout and work on every muscle group twice a week. I have been doing different workouts to confuse the muscles. I’ve been taking Pre-workout drinks, Creatine and Whey Protein Shakes. I also am eating every three hours to make sure my body does not dig into my lean muscle tissue. The whole supplement concept is always confusing. I was wondering if a testosterone booster such as Powerfull by USP Labs would help me get to where I want to be. If not maybe something different even if it doesn’t involve supplements. I follow and try all of your suggestions by email or video.

How do you keep the causes to a minimum to keep down the pain. When I wear fingerless gloves I do not feel that I have the grip on tyhe dumbbells that I do without gloves. This is most pronounced on arm curls.

  • Nick

I recently starting taking glutamine, and i’ve have read on some websites and they are saying that you shouldnt take glutamine directly with creatine. So basically i was wondering when’s the best times to take glutamine and how many grams per day while on creatine?

  • Hey Lee, whats the best way to manipulate your diet and caloric intake when transitioning from a cutting phase to a bulking phase? becuase i tend to find that when i increase my calories after weeks of cutting, i find it difficult to keep off the fat.

Thanks for all the questions folks, I covered them all up until this one that I’ve quoted right here. So maybe next week I can pick up where we left off and answer the newer ones that have been added since.

hey lee – writing from korea where you have a growing contingent of online followers! my question: how can i build my upper chest? i’ve been working out for a few years, have bought some of your programs, eat well and train hard. in general i am satisfied with my progress but find my upper chest lags behind most everything. i know it’s a very stubborn body part and that it can take years to develop and also has a lot to do with genetics. im not looking for a quick fix. but beyond typical barbell and dumbell incline what do you recommend? what has worked for people you know?

  • Joseph from Singapore

Hey Lee do you agree with the concept of performing only 1 working set after several warm up sets? Is this enough to stimulate muscle growth? Some research has been done to back this up. What are the cons of doing only 1 working set? Cheers lol

I’m about to hit the weights after a 6 month layoff due to injury. I’ve always had awesome results from using creatine in the past. It REALLY helps me get more reps. I also progress REALLY fast after a long layoff, so is it a good idea to lay off the creatine until my gains have started to slow down?

  • gabriel

I too am a moderate smoker. I really don’t think 10 a day has much affect on your fitness, since you get a lot of smokers in the SAS. But I once gave up for 2 weeks and my appetite has never been healthier. I say “healthy” I mean “big” I didn’t have to choke down food anymore. I’ll be interested to see if Lee has found any scientific research on this. It would be cool to get a rough percentage.

What do you think about creatine and caffeine? In your opinion, is it okay to have coffee after a morning workout while supplementing creatine?

  • Frazer Burns

Hey Lee thanks for answering my question in regards to transitioning from a cutting to a bulking phase, as far as my goals are concerned im going to take your advice by finding the ‘middle ground’ as i wish to gain lean muscle without the fat loss, and ill just raise my carb intake gradually as i was on a pretty aggressive caloric deficit.

    Thanks and appreciate your help

Hi lee, I have only been working out for a month (every other day) and have changed my diet so that i get more protein and good carbs.I have also started taking maximuscle progain and i am seeing very good results in such a small amount of time. The issue i have is that the maximuscle gives me wind,is there anything i can do to prevent this. The results i am seeing make me reluctant to stop taking the supplement. Thanks

    Hey Lee,
Have you ever heard of lowering rest times for increasing muscle mass? 6 X 6 workout while lowering the rest periods weekly that is. I have to use lower weight cause of the rest period, but sounds solid. Ever known this to work?

    Thanks in advance,
    Brythe

hey Lee, i’m just wondering does having DIARRHEA every now and then affect muscle building? is any vital nutrient lost through that?

  • Jimmy

Hello Lee- thanks for all the great knowledge you share. What’s the best way for a 54 yo male to attack the iron to develop size? Because of my age should I limit how many times a week I’m working out? What sort of split and reps should I be looking for? Looking forward to watching you tonight!
