Killer Bodyweight Leg Workout… “No Gym Required!”

No Gym? No Problem!
You can still get a killer workout using no equipment at all.

Just last month my good friend Dave Ruel and I did this awesome bodyweight leg workout while we were on vacation in Cuba and it was a totally spur of the moment, made up on the spot type of workout.

The little hotel gym that was on the resort sucked… Old flimsy equipment, no squat rack, basically your typical junky hotel gym. And to make it even worse it was packed with people. I guess all the tourists were feeling guilty from over indulging in the all you can eat buffet πŸ˜‰

Anyway, we said the hell with the gym and decided to do some training outside. So below is a video clip of our outdoor bodyweight plyometric style leg workout.

Check it out…

Here’s the leg circuit routine that we did:
– Walking lunges for the length of the basketball court
– 10+ box jumps on a 2 foot high box
– 10+ vertical jumps starting from a full squat
– 25+ 1 leg standing calve raises
– 25+ bodyweight squats on your tippy toes (i.e. aka hindu squats)

Repeat the circuit at least 3 times. If you are feeling extra energetic you can do more, but 3 times through will be a killer workout for most people.

That was totally improvised… believe it or not, the resort’s super tiny ”Gymnasio” was packed! So we had to be innovative and created a bodyweight workout from scratch πŸ™‚

When I visit family in Miami I will do a full body circuit and I do get sore from it, so don’t count out body weight exercises. Another great quad exercise is the Split Squat where you put one leg behind you and put full body weight on one leg at a time. You guys could have tried some Donkey Calf Raises with one on each others back, but that would be hard to film, but then again, be really comical to see you try it! πŸ˜‰

I love these kinds of workouts!

You can also use that 2′ box to do one-legged squats: squat with one leg while the other hangs freely (don’t touch the ground, though). The first time I tried these, I was surprised to find them so challenging. I could hardly keep my balance by the end of the 3rd set!

LOL love it when you say fartin around πŸ˜›
    gonna start using that

Lee hindu squats are way easier for me than regular bodyweight squats. I used to do hundreds of repetitions 5-6 times a week and my legs were very big and rock solid hard.

    Love that huge gut! LOL

    No way that’s a 10′ rim! πŸ™‚

    Great tips!

nahhh it was bended…9′ to 9.5’…

Lee, that was one awesome leg workout really got me thinking. I have a basketball court in my back yard. If that rim is 10 feet you guys have some remarkable ups.

  • There are a bunch of comments on youtube and a few here about the height of the rim. Quite honestly I have no idea how high the rim is. It’s not like I carry around a tape measure with me everywhere I go just in case I have to measure a basket ball rim LOL

Like Dave said, it was bent so I doubt it was 10 feet tall. But you don’t even need a basketball net to do this workout, however it is nice to have something to aim for when doing the vertical jumps.

Nice vid Lee and Dave. One question though. When you do a leg workout like this, is this the entire workout for the day, or you go into a main workout?

This is a killer workout, we did 3 circuits of that routine and I was toast afterwards so that’s all the strength training that we did for that day. Now if you wanted to do some lower intensity cardio in addition to that it would be fine. But trust me this workout alone will whip your butt.

  • Good circuit… Next time you book a hotel make sure to check out http://www.HotelGymReview.com to make sure you stay at a hotel with a great fitness facility. Also, please be sure to write a review!

    Thanks.
