You’re Not Out Of Shape… You’re Out Of Practice

Have you ever caught yourself thinking:

“I’m getting too old for this.” Or maybe, “I’ve really let myself go.” Heck, you might even think, “I guess this is just what happens after 40.”

I hear comments like that all the time from guys who want to get back in shape.

Personally, I don’t think age is the real problem. I think most guys are simply out of practice.

To give you an example, think about someone who used to play the guitar every day.

They practiced for years, got pretty good, and could pick up the guitar and play almost any song they wanted.

Then life happened. Work got busy, the kids came along, other priorities took over, and eventually the guitar ended up sitting in the corner collecting dust.

Ten years later, if they decided to pick it up again, would you expect them to play just as well as they did before?

Of course not. Not because they’re older – they’re simply out of practice.

Fitness works the exact same way.

Most of the guys who follow me have exercised before. They’ve lifted weights, played sports, gone to the gym, and most already know what healthy eating looks like.

Many of them were in pretty good shape back in the day. The problem isn’t that they’ve forgotten how to exercise or don’t know what foods they should be eating. The problem is that life slowly pushed fitness further and further down the priority list.

Maybe work became more demanding. Maybe family responsibilities increased. One missed workout turned into two, then a couple of weeks, then a few months. Before they knew it, years had gone by.

Then one day they decide they’re going to get back in shape, so they try to make up for lost time. They start working out every day, completely overhaul their diet, cut the carbs, and expect to perform like they never stopped.

But that’s like expecting the guitar player to perform a concert the first day they pick the instrument back up.

It just doesn’t work that way.

What they really need isn’t more motivation or another extreme program. They simply need to start practicing again.

That might mean going for a short walk during your lunch break.

It could be doing a 30-minute workout before or after work.

Packing yourself a healthy lunch instead of grabbing fast food.

None of those things are life-changing by themselves, but together they rebuild the habits that eventually lead to life-changing results.

The great thing about the human body is that it adapts. It adapted when you became less active over the years, and it will adapt again when you start moving consistently.

Instead of stressing over how quickly you can lose weight or get back into the shape you were in 20 years ago, focus on becoming the kind of person who consistently makes healthy choices now.

Go for the walk.

Do the workout.

Eat the healthy meal.

Then repeat it tomorrow.

Those small actions might not feel like much, but they have a way of compounding over time. A year from now, you could be feeling like a totally different person wondering why you didn’t start sooner.
