We’re making our way east along the old Route 66 and loving every minute of it. If you have never driven “The Mother Road” before I highly recommend it. I think this is a “must do road trip” we’ve gotten to see and experience a lot of American history during this road trip.
During our stay in Tucumcari, New Mexico we stayed at the Blue Swallow Motel right on Route 66.
During our chit chats with the Motel owners Bill and Terri we got on to the topic of weight training because their son is competitive powerlifter. And they told us about old rec-center in town that has a public gym that’s free to use.
So sure enough Patricia and I had to go and check it out. This was the smallest gym I’ve ever been to, but it had all the basics needed for a solid workout, below is quick video clip from that old school Route 66 gym…
and keep up to date with all my latest workout videos.

These videos are awesome as it shows what you can do to keep in shape and keep the workouts going with little or limited equipment, great work Lee and Patricia, enjoy the rest of your trip.

Lee, That was NOT the smallest gym you ever saw, you should see mine. It’s my living room and my youngest son’s room. I go back and forth, in the 30 secounds it takes to go from room to room, that’s my rest. It works out pretty good. I like to use free wieghts, Dumbles, Straight bar, EZ curl bar, Heavy Elastic bands, Bull worker, Hand Grips and I wear 3 lbs hand weigths. I have been following your trip with Trisch and I am very happy seeing you both enjoying yourselfs and shareing your photos with us your readers. Talk to you soon… Herc.

A free public gym. Its looks so clean inside. If that was available by us, most of that stuff wold have been stolen and sold for scrap by now.

Those we’re kind of in the middle sets 🙂
When I’m experimenting with new equipment (or old equipment as in this case) I don’t usually go all out right off the bat. I just start off light and pyramid my way up with each set.

I have no idea how old this place is, but you are right, it has seen better days. No mirrors, no music, no air conditioning, just a square room filled with weights. Pretty basic stuff.

Home gyms not included, heck my first home gym started with a plastic cement filled York Barbell and Dumbbell set 😉

It’s a community rec-center so there is a guy who works (or volunteers) at the place. They have a basket ball court and this little weight room which is free for anyone to use.

…great old-school gym, Lee .. sometimes, you can find the neatest old “dungeon-like” places like that when you’re on the road .. I encountered one in a little town in the Pocono Mountains .. the place smelled like somebody’s basement, with rust and fungus and shit on the walls, worn-out benches covered in duct-tape, etc., and some of the dumbbells in there looked like they’d been used by Vic Tanny’s grandfather .. but there were some serious hardcore dudes in there, moving some serious sweat and some serious weight .. it was truly a “dungeon of pain” … awesome !
