Muscle Specialization Workouts

Last week I was hanging out with Elliott Hulse from http://www.LeanHybridMuscle.net

Elliott is a professional strongman competitor and one hell of a strength and conditioning coach. He works with a lot of amateur and professional athletes who are looking for that extra edge, as well as average guys who just want to get in their best shape physical shape.

Now as a strength and conditioning coach Elliott focuses more on strength and athletic performance, not so much on muscle specialization workouts. Most of his training is based around working the body as a whole unit with lots of full body workouts.

Total body training is very effective. But when you have a stubborn lagging muscle group you need to do more than just “total body workouts” to target that specific muscle group and bring it up to par with the rest of your body.

Elliott asked me to help out one of his coaching students with some specialization tips for building wide muscular lats and that’s exactly what I cover in the video below…

Now I have a question for YOU…

What are some of your stubborn body parts that you would like help with developing?

You see to help Elliott out with his new Lean Hybrid Muscle Training System I’m going to put together a special “Muscle Specialization Guide” that will show you how to target your stubborn muscle groups and perform specific exercises to help bring them up to par with your stronger muscle groups.

So in the comments section below please let me know exactly what are your most stubborn muscle groups that you would like to get specialized workout programs for?

I’m sure everyone reading this has at least 1 body part that they’d like to improve, so I’m hoping for at least 100 comments to this blog post.

Than based on the feedback I get here I’m going to pick the most popular ones and create a complete “Muscle Specialization Training Guide” for those specific body parts.

So take a minute right now and post your comments below…

I feel that my biceps are too small for my chest, back, shoulders and legs 🙁

  • Brahm

Upper back/traps, with triceps being a close second.

  • John Moff

My chest lag behind the rest by far since for 5 reps i can do 180kg deadlifts, 150kg squats and only about 90kg benchpress. This is on a consistant basis as well since i have had more weight out of each in the past but cannot allway get it out with good for.
My arms and shoulder look so much bigger in comparison

  • Jonathan verdin

I would have to say my arms and abs for me are the stubborn parts Mr. Hayward

  • Awesome, thanks for the fast reply’s keep’em coming!

  • Geoff Lorenzon

I would have to say legs and chest, but I think I’m on the right track with chest, so legs, definitely…..

  • For me it’s always been quad size. I have a huge ass but still have skinny legs.

  • Nick

Hey Lee, I would probably say my chest could use some work ( I’d love to get some development before summer starts 😉 ). I know too many guys at the gym only focus on the beach muscles; so maybe legs would be an important focus for these guys as well.

  • Farley

Calves! Upper thighs are a close second. Leg work is hard for me because I get lower back pain fairly easily, so I have to be particularly careful in my lower body workout.

  • Evan

Hey Lee, I find that my forearms are my most stubborn part along with my lower biceps. Can’t wait until the program comes out!

  • daniel

Shoulders, no matter how much i train them, they never seem to grow like the rest of my body, they also don’t seem to pop out.

  • Rams

Finding it really hard to build top part of my chest bottom is big top is flat wide gap between pecs 🙁

  • Hem

my calves… they suck! they’re high inserts and no matter how hard (heavy, high reps, different positions, different machines, different styles of training, etc…) they just don’t grow as much as the rest of my body. i know they can’t grow longer, but if i could get them to pop out more that would be great.

I have a problem with good just development . I do flat bench 285 max decline 265 max and incline 225 max I do flys flat and incline and do dumbell flat and incline . I do light weight high reps and heavy low reps and do max 1rep two shock them and still don’t have a good shaped chest . NEED HELP

  • GT

My traps for sure. Can’t seem to get them to grow at all.

  • Dan Byrne

Outer Deltoids find it hard to develop width across my shoulders

  • zack

    Chest and legs.

  • Richard Probert

    Chest is stubborn.

  • Ashram

My quads are an acceptable size but my calves are very wanting. I work my calves hard and at different angles but I notice the strenght increase but not the size increase.

  • gerardo tellez

Chest…as much as I change routines and methods,it seems to fall flat. I know genetics play a huge part but something new wouldn’t hurt

  • Kris

LEGS…but only the hamstrings, inner thigh and glutes..the rest of my leg muscles respond well..
Btw, I have a bad right ankle so I can’t squat super heavy weight..
And thanks for all the great tips, you’re a great resource..

  • Naveen

I think its the lats and chest which takes a lot of time and effort
to get to a substantial level of growth

  • I feel that my calves are my most stubborn muscle to develop.

  • Thomas

Shoulders by far. They just refuse to grow

  • Rick V

I have decent upper body development, but have always had small ankles – small calves, short legs and muscular but small thighs – due to knee injury/ ankle weakness I cannot utilize heavy weight for heavy squats or lunges and would like some idea as to how to work my legs a couple of times a weak to increase size without killing my knee surgery knee and kill my connective tissue in both legs in the process – Thanks in Advance for your suggestions!

  • Saul

CHEST!!!! It just doesnt grow good! I have noticed that people that are naturally wide, they lack chest development but usually develop better arms. People that are narrower usually develop a better chest. I’m assuming that this is due to muscle being closer together. Same goes for the shorter people being able to develop muscle quicker than the taller guy.

  • Chest is a huge issue for me, I can squat 275 but can barely bench 135

  • Daniel

CHEST, it seems no matter what i do i cannot build up my pecs! hope you can help

  • Simon

Forearms, I’m a tall guy with long extremities and while my calves have a decent size I always find my forearms to trail way behind my uperarm.

  • Dallin

For sure it is biceps for me. I have very skinny arms

  • gary G

my biceps are not getting as big as i would like them to be

  • Slade

every muscle group is massive. i just have poor bicep peak genetics

  • david

Biceps and back fat !!! How do u get did of the love handles

  • faisal

my back, as i can do good weights on chest, legs and other muscles but cant really push more on back.

  • Neil

Gotta be my back and calves – I’ve been hammering my back weekly for about 7 months, and I haven’t noticed much improvement (although I realise these things take time)

I do 3 sets pullups 10 reps each – 3 sets lat pull downs – 3 sets barbel rows – 3 sets machine rows or single arm dumbbell rows followed by the beast that is the deadlift.

  • Mike

I have a very weak lower back!

  • Mike

abs for sure and then the chest

  • Barry

The lower part of my pecs…at the nipples and lower….

  • Brandon

I’d have to say my calves and my lower back.

  • Jason

Shoulders would be my biggest problem. also if you could do like a detailed way on how to do deadlifts it would help, i get contradictions from people in the gym and youtube.

  • Henk Broekmann

Yes I had a question,…..but….This video placed here answered that about lats. Also my upper arms are slow to pick up size, but like this vid this will no doubt answer that also. I also like to add the vids you have are great mate. Good Instructions deserve praise.

  • Ken

I would have to say that my legs are the part of my body that I have the most trouble with because I can’t do squats due to a disability. I try to make up for it with lots of leg extensions & leg presses. My legs have improved some, but not much.

  • Larry

    without question, abs & calves

  • Adrian

I would like to develop bigger forearms, wrists and muscular hands. They look thin and weak, especially my hands. Any suggestions?

  • Greg

My triceps and shoulders are really strong but seem to hate increasing in size. They’ll get stronger but wont grow at all =(

  • Kane

I think my arms are very stubborn and my chest could use work… Shoulders, back and legs are pretty awesome.
    Cheers Lee.

  • My Chest is my biggest problem mostly inner.

  • My Chest and Abs are not trained as they should for my body frame, also any tips on how to increase muscle size itself. thanks alot big fan, keep the info coming, Keep it up, BIG FAN!

  • Paul

My biceps for sure. I have excellent tricep development and have 18″ arms and feel my biceps lack size and shape.

  • JC

I would say abs n lower back for myself. Thx.
