High Energy Fat Loss: A Smarter Approach to Getting Lean After 40

High Energy Fat Loss - A Smarter Approach To Getting Lean After 40

If you’ve recently seen some of my videos or posts talking about High Energy Fat Loss and you’re curious to know exactly what it is, I’d like to give you the basic idea behind this unique approach to getting back in shape in your 40s and beyond.

My name is Lee Hayward, and I’ve been involved in bodybuilding and fitness for most of my life.

I started working out back in 1990, entered my first bodybuilding competition in 1995, and launched my first bodybuilding and fitness website in 1997.

Throughout my 20s and 30s, I competed in bodybuilding, won 15 trophies, and eventually went on to help other up-and-coming bodybuilders. I’ve worked with hundreds of guys locally in person and thousands more from all over the world through my online fitness and nutrition coaching programs.

So you could say I’ve been around this stuff for a while…

Lee Hayward has been involved with Bodybuilding and Fitness since 1990. But his approach has changed a lot over the years.

But ironically, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about getting in shape didn’t come from competing in bodybuilding.

It came after I stopped competing and became a father myself.

When Fitness Doesn’t Fit Your Life Anymore…

When I was younger, I made fitness one of the biggest priorities in my life.

I’d train six days per week.

Spend a couple hours in the gym.

Push myself hard.

Follow strict diets, meal prep, track calories and macros, etc.

And when it was competition time and I wanted to get ripped, I’d simply tighten things up, exercise more, eat less, and grind it out.

But life changed as I got older.

I got married.

Became a father.

Had businesses to run.

Had more responsibilities and less free time.

And eventually my health and fitness started taking a back seat.

Even as a former competitive bodybuilder, I reached a point where my belly stuck out further than my chest, and I didn’t recognize the guy looking back at me in the mirror.

Even with decades of fitness experience, I still found myself out of shape after becoming a busy husband, father, and business owner.

Of course, I knew how to lose weight…

I could have gone back to my old bodybuilding approach and forced myself through another hardcore cutting diet.

But at this stage of my life, I didn’t have the motivation or willpower to spend 2+ hours per day in the gym while living off boiled chicken and broccoli.

I wanted something I could actually enjoy doing. Something that didn’t leave me feeling hungry, depleted, and like I was burning the candle at both ends.

I wanted to get leaner, build muscle, have more energy, and enjoy the process.

And that’s ultimately where the idea behind High Energy Fat Loss came from.

The Problem With “Eat Less & Exercise More”

We’ve all heard the standard advice:

If you want to lose weight, eat less and exercise more.

And technically, there’s truth to it.

In order to lose body fat, you need to create a calorie deficit.

But the problem is how most people go about creating that deficit.

They finally get to their wits’ end and decide:

“That’s it. No more. I’m going to make a change!”

So they get serious, jump in, and change everything overnight.

They slash their calories.

Cut the carbs. Cut out the sugar.

Stop eating their favorite foods.

Start doing more cardio.

Work out every day.

And for a little while, that approach works.

The scale goes down and they feel motivated.

But then something else starts happening…

They’re hungry.

Their energy drops.

Their workouts begin to suffer.

Cravings increase.

And staying consistent gets harder and harder.

Eventually life gets busy, motivation fades, and the whole thing starts falling apart.

Before long, they’re back to their old habits and the weight starts creeping back on.

It’s the typical yo-yo diet cycle all over again.

A lot of guys can stay stuck in this rut for weeks or even months… until they finally get fed up again, decide to start another diet, and repeat the whole process.

Different diet. Same cycle.

That’s why I don’t think the answer for most people is simply trying harder.

Sometimes you need a better strategy.

What If You Could Eat More AND Burn More?

One of the main principles I teach within the High Energy Fat Loss Program is something I call:

Eat More & Burn More.

Now, that doesn’t mean you can eat unlimited calories and magically lose body fat.

Calories still matter.

But rather than looking at fat loss entirely through the lens of restriction…

“What foods do I have to cut out?”

“How little can I eat?”

“How much can I suffer?”

I like to flip that around.

What does your body need MORE of?

For example:

More protein.

More fruits and vegetables.

More water.

More quality nutrition.

More daily movement.

More productive exercise.

More of the things that help your body feel and perform better.

EAT MORE + BURN MORE = HIGH ENERGY FAT LOSS

Instead of trying to starve yourself into a smaller version of who you are, the goal is to nourish your body into becoming a stronger, leaner, and healthier version of yourself.

When you start filling up on quality foods and giving your body the nutrition it needs, you tend to feel more satisfied.

When you’re properly fueled, you have more energy.

When you have more energy, you naturally tend to move more and your workouts feel better.

And when you’re eating better, moving more, and exercising consistently, it becomes much easier to create the conditions needed for sustainable long-term fat loss.

That’s the basic idea behind Eat More & Burn More.

Train Smarter, NOT Harder

Nutrition is only one part of the equation.

The same philosophy applies to exercise.

When I was younger, I lived by the old-school bodybuilding mentality:

No Pain, No Gain.

Go Big or Go Home.

More is better.

I used to train six days per week and would often spend two hours in the gym.

And when I was younger, single, and had no one else depending on me, I could get away with spending hours in the gym.

But these days, I can’t live in the gym.

And frankly, I don’t think you need to.

For most guys who simply want to build muscle, lose the gut, get stronger, and feel confident in their own skin, you can accomplish a lot with just a few well-planned workouts per week.

These days, I keep my strength training to three workouts per week lasting approximately 45–60 minutes.

That gives me enough training to make progress while also giving my body time to rest and recover between workouts.

More importantly, it leaves me with energy for everything else I want to do.

Because your workout shouldn’t leave you so exhausted that you spend the rest of your day sitting on the couch recovering from it.

Fitness is supposed to improve your life – NOT become your life…

Fitness is supposed to improve your life - NOT become your life.

That’s why another major principle of High Energy Fat Loss is:

Train Smarter, NOT Harder.

Consistency Beats Perfection

This may be the most important lesson of all.

A lot of people think they need to have the perfect diet or perfect workout program before they can get started.

So they wait.

They wait until Monday.

They wait until January.

They wait until work settles down.

They wait until they’re motivated.

And when that magical moment finally arrives…

They go ALL IN.

Strict low-calorie diet.

Hardcore workouts.

No junk food.

No missed days.

Everything has to be 100%.

But how long is that really going to last?

Eventually, something is going to derail that “perfect plan.”

They miss a workout.

Have a bad meal.

Go away for the weekend or take a vacation.

Things get busy at work.

And suddenly they feel like they’ve blown it.

That’s the ALL-or-NOTHING trap.

And I’ve seen people repeat that ON-and-OFF cycle for years.

Instead, I teach something much simpler:

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be Good Enough — and Good Enough Consistently.

You Don't Need To Be Perfect. You just need to be Good Enough Consistently.

Maybe you don’t have time for the perfect workout today.

But can you do something?

Maybe dinner wasn’t exactly what your nutrition plan called for.

But can you make a better food choice and move on?

Maybe you had a bad weekend and fell off track.

But can you refocus and get back on track with your next meal instead of waiting until next Monday?

One bad day isn’t what gets people out of shape.

It’s what happens when that one day turns into a week… then a month… then several months.

Likewise, one perfect workout isn’t what gets you in shape.

It’s all the little “Good Enough” decisions you make consistently over time.

The Goal Is to Actually Enjoy the Process

This is something I’ve come to appreciate more and more as I’ve gotten older.

The “best” fitness routine isn’t necessarily the one that science says produces the fastest possible results on paper.

It’s the one you can actually see yourself doing long term.

Sure, there are extreme diet plans that could make you lose weight faster.

There are advanced workouts that can burn more calories.

And there may be exercises that are technically “better” for maximizing muscle growth.

But if you hate doing them…

How long are you realistically going to keep it up?

You can force yourself through almost anything for a few weeks with enough grit, discipline, and willpower.

But eventually that approach tends to backfire.

Willpower is a limited resource. You can’t suffer it out forever.

On the other hand, when you enjoy your workouts, enjoy the activities you’re doing, and enjoy the way you’re eating, you don’t have to constantly force yourself to stay on track.

It simply becomes part of how you live.

The real goal of fitness isn't just looking better. It's having the health and energy to enjoy your life.

And that’s what I’m interested in these days.

Not helping someone get in shape for some six-week shred, only to rebound after the diet is over and gain everything back.

I want to help people become the kind of person who stays in shape year-round.

So, What Is the High Energy Fat Loss Program?

These are some of the core principles behind the High Energy Fat Loss Program.

I created it primarily for busy men who want to lose the gut, build muscle, increase their energy, and get back in shape without following extreme diets or spending their lives in the gym.

It’s a simple 5-part video course that walks you through the entire approach step-by-step.

You’ll learn about:

The Perfect Plan — and why trying to be perfect can actually make it harder to stay consistent.

Eat More & Burn More — how to structure your nutrition and activity so you can lose fat without feeling like you’re constantly depriving yourself.

Train Smarter, NOT Harder — how to build muscle, improve your fitness, and burn body fat without beating yourself into the ground.

The Lean Body Game Plan — how to combine your nutrition, strength training, cardio, and daily activity into a realistic plan you can follow.

And there’s also an advanced bonus training called “Why Effort Alone Isn’t Enough,” where I go deeper into how to optimize your environment at home and at work so making the right choices becomes easier to follow through with consistently.

The High Energy Fat Loss Program is about changing the way you approach fitness.

But more than anything, High Energy Fat Loss is about changing the way you approach fitness.

Instead of constantly asking:

“How little can I eat?”

“How much harder can I work?”

“How quickly can I lose this weight?”

I want you to start asking:

“How can I make this work in my real life?”

Because the goal isn’t simply to lose some weight.

It’s to get leaner.

Build muscle.

Get stronger.

Have more energy.

Feel better about yourself.

And create a way of eating and exercising that you actually enjoy enough to keep doing because you want to.
