About Lee Hayward’s Total Fitness Bodybuilding…
Since 1997 my Total Fitness Bodybuilding website has been online helping people build better bodies. I’ve been around since the start of the online bodybuilding and fitness scene. If you want to know who you can trust, it’s simple, just look for a coach who has passed the hardest test of all – The Test Of Time!
How It All Got Started…
Fitness has been a passion of mine from a very young age. My father had a huge influence on me because he worked out and kept active, and he still does to this day.
However, the real eye opener for me came when I was just 12 years and I seen Arnold Schwarzenegger for the first time in the Conan The Barbarian movies. I was blown away that someone could be that big and look like a real life comic book super hero. I was determined that I would someday look like that myself.
Throughout grade school I was picked on and bullied by the bigger kids. Which negatively affected my self esteem and confidence. So I thought that if I could build muscle, get bigger, and stronger then no one would ever bully me again.
I can remember doing exercises like push ups and sit ups in my bedroom before school each morning, thinking to myself…
“If I do this everyday until the end of the school year I’ll be as big as Arnold.”
Unfortunately, building a muscular body isn’t quite that simple 🙂
Back in 1990 I asked my parents if they would get me a home gym weight set for Christmas so that I could workout and get big. I can still remember how excited I was Christmas morning when I woke up and saw the HUGE box under the Christmas tree.
After ripping through all the fancy wrapping paper and colored bows there was a York 2001 Home Gym Machine and a York Barbell and Dumbbell set. We set it up that very day and I did my first official weight training workout on Christmas day 1990.
From that point on I was hooked on weight training, bit by the “Iron Bug” as they say. During high school I worked out consistently and I would read every bodybuilding and fitness magazine that I could get my hands on. I’d get bodybuilding and exercise books from the library and read them cover to cover.
Back in those days bodybuilding contests like the Mr. Olympia and Arnold Classic used to be aired on television, so I’d record them on VHS tapes and watch them over and over again. I was obsessed with learning as much about bodybuilding, exercise and nutrition as I could.
While in my senior year of high school I entered my first Bodybuilding contest, The 1995 Newfoundland Provincials, I was 17 years old at the time. Since then I went on to compete multiple times at the provincial and regional level.
Throughout the late 1990’s and early 2000’s my life was centered around bodybuilding. In addition to competing I became a bodybuilding judge, served on the executive with the NLABBA bodybuilding federation, and coached numerous up and coming competitors.
After high school I went on to do a computer studies program in College. This is where I got my interest in computers and the Internet. Keep in mind that when I started working out and competing there was no Internet. So I can remember sitting in the computer lab in the fall of 1997 when I logged on to the Internet for the very first time.
I asked the guy sitting at the computer next to me “how do you use the internet?”
He said “you go to yahoo and search for something” (Note: this was before google)
So that’s just what I did and the first thing I searched for was “bodybuilding”
In the computer studies course that I was doing they taught a basic class on writing HTML and designing websites. And in January of 1997 I created my website www.LeeHayward.com. From then on I’ve focused on improving it, adding more useful information, and making it better each year.
Through my website I have had the opportunity to connect with literally thousands of aspiring bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts from all over the world and help them with their bodybuilding and nutrition programs. To this day I still love coaching people and helping them improve their health, fitness, and self confidence through proper bodybuilding training.
From Skinny, To Fat, To Muscular…
I know all too well what it’s like to be the weak skinny guy who gets bullied – as well as the fat chubby guy who gets made fun of – in order to get where I am today I had to work my butt off in the gym through years of trial and error.
So, if you’re struggling to build a lean muscular physique, I can relate to what you’re going through…
When I started lifting weights I was a skinny 135 pounds with “spaghetti noodle arms”. I literally spent several years in the gym fumbling around trying all sorts of different workout programs, eating everything in sight, and choking down protein & weight gainer shakes…
By doing this I managed to gain weight alright, at my all time heaviest body weight I was 240 pounds of sloppy fat. But that was NOT the look I wanted to have for my body, I wanted to be lean and muscular – not just big and bulky.
It was only after I started getting coached personally by advanced bodybuilders and powerlifters that things started to change for me. With their coaching and guidance I discovered the delicate balance of how to properly eat and train to strip away my excess bodyfat while actually building lean muscle mass and gaining strength in the process.

…Getting Back In Shape After 40…
Today I’m still a huge fan of the sport of bodybuilding and actively participate with our local bodybuilding federation as the MC of our provincial shows.
But now my main training and coaching focus has shifted towards helping Men Over 40 To Build Muscle, Lose The Gut, and Get Back In Shape using my Muscle After 40 Blueprint System.
I can relate to the struggles most men face with raising a family, getting caught up with work, business, and other responsibilities – while neglecting their health and fitness in the process… Because that’s exactly what happened to me just a few years ago.
After I stopped competing in bodybuilding and became a father I never had the time (or the motivation) to spend endless hours in the gym. And I was sick of eating chicken and rice out of Tupperware.
And it didn’t take long for it to show…
It got to the point where I didn’t even recognize the man looking back at me in the mirror. I was disgusted and embarrassed with how fat and out of shape I became…
Here I was a so called “fitness expert” with a 40+ inch waistline and a belly that stuck out further than his chest…
Because of this I’ve come up with a realistic and sustainable system of eating and exercising that doesn’t involve spending endless hours in the gym, nor following extreme low calorie / low carb diet plans.
It’s all about escaping the yo-yo dieting trap, learning how to master your metabolism, and do the little things that pull the big levers and can make a massive difference in your health, fitness, and how you look and feel about yourself.
If you’d like to learn more about my new approach to building muscle, losing the gut, and getting back in shape – than check out my website at: https://MuscleAfter40Blueprint.com
Today I’m a rock solid 190 pounds and at my height of 5’6″, that’s a body weight that I’m comfortable with and can maintain without going to extremes (Note: I only go to the gym 3 days per week and I still eat big satisfying meals). I’m happy with the body I have now because it’s big enough that I can fill out a Large T-shirt with lean muscle and look athletic. But not so big that I feel heavy or sluggish.
My goal is to help you go beyond simply being “big in the gym”, to having the combination of strength, health, agility, and mobility to enjoy life to the fullest – That’s what Total Fitness Bodybuilding is all about!
You see I’m just a regular guy with average genetics at best. But I took action, found my mentors, and followed their guidance to reach my goals… and I can help you do the same.
