How To Get Rid Of Body Hair…

Shaving Body Hair For Men…

If you follow the wonderful world of bodybuilding, fitness, and physical culture long enough there will come a day when you realize that all the fit muscular dudes that grace the pages of the magazines, step on the competition stage, and even those who just strut their stuff down on the beach with sculpted 6 pack abs and ripped muscles glistening in the sunlight…

You’ll notice that they all have one thing in common…
They have NO Body Hair…
How can this be? They don’t actually shave… (do they?)

Nah, not these guys… there is no way these massive mountains of muscle, the same ones you’ll see bench pressing compact cars as a warm up set, will ever stoop to the level of bending over the edge of the bathtub with a can of shaving cream and razor in hand scraping away the hairs on their legs like a little school girl…!?!?

But the harsh reality of bodybuilding is that they DO!!!

Yes, my friend even the biggest and the burliest of bodybuilders will pay their dues, with razor in hand, shedding unwanted body hair in order to reveal the muscular physique that was carved from blood, sweat, and tears in the gym.

I can remember the first time I “shaved my legs”. It was during summer break of 1995. I was 16 years old and planning on competing in my first bodybuilding competition in a few months time. I was home alone, my parents were both at work. So I basically had the house to myself, what better time to experiment with shaving my legs…

To make a long story short…
4 worn out razors and 3 hours later I was sporting silky smooth legs, along with several nicks, cuts, and scabs to boot. Then to show off those freshly shaven white pillar’s of power, I put on a pair of gym shorts… It’s actually scary to see how white you are underneath all that hair.

In a strange sort of why I felt like this was a critical milestone that just I overcame in my bodybuilding journey… yes I admit this sport of ours is a bit weird.

Lee Hayward

Anyway, later that afternoon when my parents came home from work we had the usual routine chit chat:

Dad:
“Hey Lee, we’re home! How was your day?”

Me:
“It was ok…”

Dad:
“What did you do today?”

Me:
“I shaved my legs today…”

Dad:
“You did WHAT!!!”

Me:
“I shaved my legs… you know… to get ready for that bodybuilding contest.”

Dad:
“You’re not serious…?!?!”

Me:
“Yeah, I really did shave my legs… all the bodybuilders do it before a bodybuilding contest.”

Dad:
“How on earth did you do that?”

Me:
“With a razor… several razors actually.”

Dad:
“Oh dear God…
Lee… I gotta tell you something… normal guys don’t shave their legs… you’re just not supposed to do that… it’s not natural.”

Needless to say, I didn’t feel too confident in myself at this stage and I certainly wasn’t gaining the approval of my old man. I think he was questioning my masculinity at this stage and he was having some doubts about his boy’s future.

But he eventually overcame his fears and concerns about my “manliness”. And now, 15+ years of bodybuilding competitions later, the thought of men shaving their legs is just another routine task… just like brushing your teeth 😉

So for all my fellow brothers of iron who are ready to take your bodybuilding game to the next level and… “Shave Your Legs” this article is for you!

This is what I call the A.B.C’s of shaving body hair…
Trust me this is not something you will learn from your dad…

The bottom line is that hair removal is a pain for everyone. And depending on how hairy you are will determine how much of a nuisance removing that hair will be.

In my case I’m pretty lucky because I don’t have a very hairy back or chest, just the few odd hairs here and there, nothing major. And my legs are what I’d consider average for a guy in terms of the amount of hair that I have growing there.

Now there are lots of hair removal methods and gimmicks on the market today; from creams, electronic gizmos, and God knows what else. Personally, I’ve never really gotten into using any of them myself. I’ve heard a few horror stories over the years from people who have experimented with various things. And I can remember when I was living at home my mom tried a particular hair removal cream and she broke out in a ugly red rash that irritated her skin big time. So I’ve just stuck to the basic old school method of hair removal – shaving.

Step 1

If you’ve never shaved before and you have a lot of hair then I’d suggest you get yourself a pair of hair cutting clippers, the same ones the barber will use to give you a buzz cut. Using just the clipper itself with no comb, carefully trim away the hair from your legs, arms, chest, etc. and then get someone to help you with your back and areas you can’t reach. Hair Cutting Clippers

A word of advice here, make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Shaving A LOT of hair cannot be rushed. It could easily take a couple hours or more, especially when you don’t have a clue what you are doing.

To make it easier on yourself I’d suggest that you just shave your legs with the clippers at first, then call it a day. The next day come back and shave your upper body with the clippers.

After you’ve completed this clipper trimming, your body will be covered in tiny stubble. Rubbing your hand over your skin will feel like sand paper. Not the most sexy thing, especially if you are planning on getting intimate with that special someone.

Step 2

Anyway, the next day I’d suggest you break out the razor blade, the same one you use to shave your face with. Again schedule yourself lots of time, get in the shower and soap up your legs. Using a brand new razor blade, shave away… Make sure to be extra careful when shaving around the groin area (for obvious reasons) and just take your time, don’t rush things because this is what causes careless nicks and cuts. Shaving Razor

If you can shave the stubble off both legs before you run out of hot water in the shower consider this a major accomplishment, you are well on your way to bodybuilding success LOL

The next day, do the same thing for your upper body. Again give yourself lots of time, lather up with soap, be careful, and always use a brand new razor blade.

One thing you’ll most likely notice a day or so after shaving is that you’ll break out in a razor rash of little red bumps, especially on sensitive areas like the inner thighs. While this is very annoying, it will become less irritated as you get used to shaving and your skin “toughens up” to the whole process. Keep in mind you are a shaving virgin right now and you have to suffer through this beginner stage, before you can get to the point of confidently sporting a ripped, hair free, muscle bod on the beach or competition stage.

After you have gone through the whole process of ridding your body of all the hair you can maintain your hair free body by simply shaving off the stubble once every 7-10 days in the shower. Again the easiest way to do this is divide your body in half, shave your legs one day, and then shave your upper body the next.

Well there you have it my friend. A step-by-step plan to go from a hairy sasquatch, to a smooth, handsome, hairless physique…

Now if losing this dam beer gut was just as easy we’d have it made…

Conclusion…

So now you know how to shave off all that unwanted body hair that’s covering your physique, however that’s the “Easy Part”.

The hardest part is actually developing a lean muscular physique that’s worth shaving to begin with…

So if you would like some help with building a beach worthy body, that’s what I’m here for!

i have been shaving my upper body for the last 2 years now, and been thinking of starting shaving my legs as well, so it is good to get some tips from one who have done it a lot of times 🙂
and even after 2 years my dad still have not gone over the fact, and he still questions my sexuality…it is not easy trying to break though as pro wrestler and want to be exactly like a bodybuilder

Isn’t waxing a better, safer and less time consuming option?
I’ve never done a full body, so I don’t know how painful some areas might be, but the growth stage takes almost a month…so that might be a better choice than shaving… and sporting a stubble the very next day

  • shaun

All those harmful chemicals on the skin, no thanks. I’d rather stay a little hairy, how men are supposed to look.

  • Rich Palarea

Whew…I thought there was going to be a video on this one. Good thing. Thanks, Lee.

I’ve never tried waxing before… How about you give it a go first and let me know how it works out 😉

Don’t worry, there will NOT be an accompanying YouTube video for this one.
Some things are better left un-shown… LOL

  • It was quite the psychological barrier to overcome the first time that I decided to shave my entire body, but once I did it I became hooked! I love how it shows off your definition and vascularity… and I like how it feels.

My chest is a sensitive area, so immediately after shaving I’ve been using a product called Bikini Zone. It felt almost as uncomfortable as purchasing my first pack of condoms, but it was worth it. No irritation, no bumps, and no ingrown hairs.

I’ve been doing the same thing and shaving my lower body one day and upper body the next. My wife has complained that I spend more time grooming myself than she does 😉

I am actually thinking about waxing my arms and chest. I’ll let you know how it goes if I do go through with it.

I have been shaving for a while and think its a real pain. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with any of the regrowth reduction lotions (Hair No More, UHA, etc.). I’d like to get some good feedback before I waste my money in hopes of reducing my body hair

Why don’t men just suck it up and get waxed like women do? I hate hairy men, and love the smooth hairless bodies of men but I also hate feeling any stubble. If you wax, you don’t have to worry about hair for a couple of weeks!! The first time I got my legs waxed it hurt but I’ve been doing it for 25 years as well as Brazilian waxes you know where and after awhile you get use to it. Men are just wimps when it comes to pain!! If you are a real man, I dare you to get waxed!!! If you are really strong, you’ll get your groin waxed (by the way, in Brazil, they don’t call it a Brazilian wax, they call it “depilação de virilha” which literally means “de-hairing of the groin”, lol!! Why is it that many men can handle getting tatooed but not getting waxed?

  • Balmesboy

Get it waxed……so much easier and NO stubble. Nothing worse, lasts alot longer and really is not as bad as people make out. A little discomfort/sting and then all fine. Simple and far more effective

  • leehayward,

Forget about waxing!! I’ve tried before and I would never do it again. It made me cry!!! Let me tell you I have a lot of hair and it was so painful that my skin started to bleed. I was planning on waxing the hole body but in the end I could only resist the back and half of my chest.

  • I’ve personally never tried waxing so that’s why I never mentioned it here in this article. I’m just covering what I do personally to get hair free for the stage, beach, etc. But maybe I’ll try waxing… It hurts just thinking about it 🙁

  • GetTat2ed

I had my girl friend (now wife) wax my chest twice. Aside from the #@$% mind numbing pain I felt, it caused folliculitis both times, which really was worse than the damn waxing itself. Sure it left my skin smooth but the folliculitis was painful and extremely itchy! After trying it twice, I’ve decided to stick with shaving. It’s not quite as smooth and the hair grows back faster than waxing but the folliculitis is nasty and looks really really bad. I’ve read that there are ways to reduce the reaction to waxing and over time it gets less painful and your skin doesn’t react as much, but I’ve given up on it. I’m leaving the waxing to the women…..where it probably belongs. Most of the athletes I train with use the clipper-razor method Lee recommends. In fact, I don’t know of any of them who have tried (or at least willing to admit to) waxing.

  • Steve

I’m cool with the shaving bit … what I would really like to see you write an article on is what are the best tanning products you’ve used to get that great dark look ! Thanks Lee.

  • Balmesboy

    GetTat2ed,

To be fair alot of waxing involves getting the technique right and unless yr wife/girlfriend is trained in hair removal, it can be extremely painful. Actually outta all the areas the chest can be the most painful there are lots of reasons why and in nearly all cases more painful than the lower areas. That’s why getting someone who knows exactly what they are doing is important. Also by going to a trained therapist they will give you some idea of how to treat any problems or reactions that may occur. Once over those initial things, every 4-6 weeks is alot better in my opinion than shaving every 2-3 days and that stubble u get. but that’s just personal preference and I’m fairly hairy but not in the realms of a gorilla.

What about Lasers? The TRIA laser supposedly is the only one FDA approved. It has a small laser head, so it’ll take hours to do large parts of your body, and you have to do something like 4-8 sessions over a few months, but they say it works…

Older dude here and not bodybuilder, but appreciate the article. 5-6 of us that hit the gym together have buddy who is going to be going through chemo soon, and when his hair goes, so will ours for that period of time. should keep him more comfortable getting to the gym and getting out vs. hibernating at home. good to see the time frame. to be honest, i figured you just grabbed a couple razors and can of shave cream. thanks again.

  • I do the same thing however after a day i got rashes and redness on my thigh, chest along with that small pimples & slightly itching…….. Please advice

I get the same after I shave. But I find using a brand new blade helps to reduce the skin irritation somewhat. The main thing is to shave a few days prior to allow your skin time to heal. For example, if you are shaving for a bodybuilding competition make sure to shave at least 3-4 days prior to the contest to allow your skin time to heal from razor rash.

Shaving body hair doesn’t sound right and it is not right; and I don’t care if you’re bodybuilder or not.

I am big into the gym, cycling, running and swimming. In all if these pursuits people shave all or sone if their body hair and do the same. I shave everything every day. I use an electric shaver on my legs which takes a few minutes and quicky skim over my arms which have some hair on. Then when I go to shave my face I also shave my chest again it takes little time as there is only light stubble. I do use a separate razor for my chest. When I have a shower I then shave down below again using a different razor. Every so often I will razor shave my legs to get them super smooth and always use a ladies leg razor as they are the best by far.
What started off as shaving for sport has now become a way of life and I love being hair free.
Kevin G age 58 Love wearing tights also but that’s another story. ..

I am into fitness and body building, and thus shave my entire body, including legs, chest, butt, butt crack, balls, penis, entire groin area, underarms, arms, fingers, knuckles, EVERYTHING!

I also use skin lightner to lighten up blotches, especially the skin under my ball sack, and the skin around my anus, and my butt crack in general.

My wife gets really annoyed about it, but other women I know love it. My wife thinks its a sign that I might be gay, but I have more women friends now than I ever had, and many have asked me to sleep with them. I have the physique to do it and show off my body.

Great information!. It may be hard to decide what
routines to start and which products to use to prevent it, if we have not
a proper knowledge about it. Thanks for the wonderful article, it may
be very helpful for everyone who is conscious about.
