“Healthy” Version of KFC’s Double Down!

This past weekend while I was kicking back on the couch and flipping through the channels on the TV I happened to see an advertisement for the KFC Double Down. Now I have to admit this unique fast food item caught my attention and fired up my appetite…

KFC Double Down – (Now Available In Canada!)

KFC Double Down Chicken Sandwich

To Quote KFC’s website…

This one-of-a-kind sandwich features two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken filets, two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. This product is so meaty, there’s no room for a bun!

Now if you live in North America chances are that you have also seen this ad before on TV. And who knows, maybe you’ve even indulged in one of these tasty meaty chicken sandwiches yourself…
After all, I think we can all agree that this does look pretty damn good!

After seeing this ad several times, the image of mouth watering crispy chicken, bacon, and cheese was stuck in my brain and I was running out of will power to turn down such a delicious treat…

I was about to throw in the towel, break down, and jump in my car and head on over to KFC…
But then I remembered that my buddy Dave Ruel had a killer Low Fat Crispy Chicken Nugget Recipe in his Anabolic Cooking Cookbook.

So this got my creative juices flowing…
Could I make a “Healthy” Version of KFC’s Double Down?

One that tasted just as good as the Colonel’s “Secret” Recipe, but wasn’t loaded with artery clogging grease and saturated fat.

The answer is YES! I could make a “Healthy” Version…
All I had to do was modify Dave’s Low Fat Crispy Chicken Nugget Recipe and use whole chicken breasts instead.

So in place of the greasy deep fried chicken breasts,
I made my own home made “Baked Crispy Chicken Breasts” using Dave’s recipe.

In place of the fatty bacon strips,
I used low fat turkey bacon.

In place of the regular cheese,
I used fat free cheese slices.

In place of the Colonel’s “Secret” Sauce,
I used low fat mayo and BBQ sauce.

I have to admit that this turned out even better than I expected.
It made for one Delicious Protein Packed, Low Fat, Healthy Muscle Building Meal.

You can compare the nutritional info below for yourself:

KFC’s Double Down

– 32 grams of fat
– 11 grams of carbs
– 53 grams of protein

Lee’s “Healthy” Double Down

– 13 grams of fat
– 11 grams of carbs
– 64 grams of protein

Because my version uses baked crispy chicken it has less than half the fat. And by using turkey bacon and fat free cheese it cuts the fat even more and bumps up the protein content!

I highly recommend you give this High Protein Muscle Building Double Down recipe a try for yourself. And please leave me a comment below letting me know how you like it.

You can usually find low fat turkey bacon and low fat chicken bacon at the grocery store. You can also get fat free cheese slices in the grocery store as well. The next time you are out shopping just look around and you should be able to pick up these items.

Hey Lee any thoughts with regards to the high sugar content in BBQ sauce, not sure if there is any healthy “diet” sauce around? Thanks

What brands (and where do you get them) of lowfat/fat-free cheese and BBQ Sauce. KC Masterpiece used to have their ‘classic’ brand that was pretty low carb, but I can’t find it anymore.

You can get light and low calorie BBQ sauces that are made with artificial sweeteners. Just shop around at the local grocery stores or health food stores.

I just used the stores “no-name” brand for fat free cheese and sauces. I find they taste just as good as the name brand stuff, but for a lot less money.

  • Crazy Bear

come on every one its ok to have one of those badboys just as long as you don’t make a habit! twice a year i would stuff my face with something like that and still be on the ball.

  • javier

@Crazy Bear but now thanks to lee’s tip we can have it every friday =D

  • Exactly, why limit yourself to only enjoying yourself once every blue moon?

With a bit of creativity you can find ways to make every meal a tasty treat and still meet your bodybuilding nutritional needs.

  • I ate the KFC doubledown last night for the first time. It was surprising delicious. They also have a grilled option, which is a little healthier.
