Start with lining a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Grease or spray some PAM on the foil to keep the salmon from sticking.

Lay out your salmon filet on the baking sheet. (I like to get my salmon from Costco as they have the best prices around for meats and fish).

Add salt, pepper, garlic, and spices according to your personal taste preferences.

Bake in the over at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes (Time will vary depending on how thick the salmon filet is and how well you like it cooked.)

Half way through I like to switch the oven to broil and turn on the top heating element. This will help cook the fish from both the top and the bottom.

That’s it, simple, quick, and clean up is easy because we used aluminum foil on the baking sheet so there is little mess involved.

Give this baked salmon recipe a try for yourself and then leave me a comment below letting me know how you like it!

Today (February 21) is Pancake Day!

I’m going to give you 3 guesses as to what I had for breakfast this morning… PANCAKES!!!

When I was a kid I really looked forward to pancake day and I would stuff my face until I couldn’t eat another bite. And even now I still look forward to pancake day. But as my knowledge of nutrition has changed over the years, so have my pancakes…

I no longer eat traditional high carb fattening pancakes, instead I stuff my face with “LOW Carb / HIGH Protein Muscle Building Pancakes!”

My good friend Dave Ruel (the author of Anabolic Cooking) turned me on to this awesome recipe a few years ago and I’ve been eating them ever since. In fact, since Dave shared this recipe with me I haven’t bought regular store bought pancake mix since.

They are pretty simple to make, just take a look at the video clip below to see exactly how it’s done…

Click PLAY To Watch The Video Below:

Note: if you can’t watch the embedded video above.
You can watch it directly on my YouTube Channel at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GdUZmXv004

Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:
–> 1 cup of liquid egg whites (approx. 8 egg whites)
–> 2 whole eggs
–> 2 scoops of whey protein powder

That’s all the ingredients I included in the video, and they work well. However, there are a few “Little Extra’s” that I’ve since added to this High Protein Pancake Recipe to make them even tastier and healthier!

–> Add 1 teaspoonful of sugar free metamucil fiber supplement. This makes the pancakes thick and fluffy and gives them a bit more flavor.

–> Add 1/2 teaspoonful of baking powder to help the pancakes more fluffy.

–> Add 1 teaspoonful of chia seeds. This gives a nice taste and they are super healthy and a good source of omega 3′s.

You can also mix this up in the blender instead of a shaker cup if you like.

Give this recipe a try today – on Pancake Day – or any time you want to enjoy a nice high protein, low carb pancake meal. And if you have any unique pancake recipe variations of your own, please feel free to share them in the comments below.

Then give these Bell Pepper Egg Rings a try!

The great thing about bell pepper egg rings from a “Bodybuilding Nutrition” point of view, is that they are a simple way to get both high quality protein and veggies into your breakfast meal.

Here’s How To Make Em…

Ingredients:
- bell peppers (any color), cut into 1 cm thick rings
- eggs
- salt and pepper
- PAM spray or olive oil

Set the burner to medium heat and spray a nonstick frying pay with PAM (or use 1 teaspoon of oil). Add bell pepper rings, then crack 1 egg into the middle of each pepper ring. Season with salt and pepper to taste and cook until egg whites are set but yolks are still runny, usually about 2 to 3 minutes. Gently flip and cook 1 minute more for over easy egg rings.

You can get creative with this if you like and add cheese or other spices over the top.

How To Quickly Remove The Seeds From Bell Peppers…

This is the easy way to cut a bell pepper and remove the seeds for egg rings, or for any recipe:
- Just chop the top of the pepper off.
- Pluck out the core with all the seeds in one clump.
- Slice up the pepper as desired.
- That’s it… A quick & easy tip to get rid of the seeds!

Do you eat protein bars?

I mean they so convenient, yet so full of garbage!

They hold the promise of being healthy, easy and full of life-giving, muscle-building protein.

But have you ever taken a minute to look actually look at what’s Really IN them?

I think you’re going to be in for a shock when you read the TRUTH about the ingredients in some of the most popular protein bars on the market right now.

Let’s get right to it…

#1 – Soy Protein Isolate (SPI)

This is, unfortunately, one of the most prevalent protein sources you’ll find in protein bars, especially those marketed to women. This marketing would have you believe that soy is an excellent protein source for women because of the isoflavones found in it. But studies have indicated that these soy isoflavones can actually be TOXIC because of how the soy is processed.

In addition, SPI was actually considered a WASTE product in soy processing until recently, when it was discovered that money could be made by passing it off as a protein source. It’s cheap and definitely NOT a high-quality protein. It should be avoided.

And the final nail in the soy coffin:
GMO. A very high percentage of the soy grown in the United States is from genetically modified organisms (GMO). They don’t currently have to be labeled as such but if you’re buying any sort of processed food, chances are good you’re getting a GMO-sourced product.

#2 – High Fructose Corn Syrup

This is an easy one to figure out…
The adverse health effects of it are well documented (contrary to what the commercials from the Corn Growers Association claim – those are truly among the most annoying commercials in existence, trying to make people who question corn syrup look stupid).

It’s one of the WORST things you can eat and yet there are still bars that use it as a primary ingredient.

#3 – Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil

Palm kernel oil is a cheap unhealthy fat. Unlike plain palm oil, palm kernel oil can’t be obtained organically. Instead, the oil must be extracted from the pit with a gasoline-like hydrocarbon solvent. The fractioned form is the most processed… If you see that in the ingredients, you should definitely avoid it.

#4 – Sugar Alcohols

This includes ingredients like Maltitol Syrup, Xylitol, Sorbitol, Lactitol, Mannitol, and Erythritol. Sugar alcohols are included in bars for sweetness – especially in bars that are “carb controlled”.

Sugar alcohols don’t impact blood sugar as much as regular sugar because they’re not well absorbed in the digestive tract… And when things aren’t well absorbed in the digestive tract, things happen (if you know what I mean).

In small amounts, sugar alcohols aren’t a big problem, but if you start getting into the double digits of grams of sugar alcohol (and many low-carb bars have 20+ grams), THEN you can start to see unpleasant digestive issues.

#5 – Artificial Sweeteners

I won’t get into the whole debate about whether artificial sweeteners are bad for you or not and what they turn into in your body, etc…

Personally, I’m of the mindset that if it’s created by science, chances are good your body won’t recognize it and won’t be able to metabolize it into something actually good for you. Therefore, I try and stay away from artificial sweeteners as much as I possibly can. I find the actual natural flavor of real food to be pretty good

<FONT="+1">In Summary…

Those are my Top 5 Worst Protein Bar Ingredients…

And you will actually find bars that contain ALL 5 of these ingredients in them.

The main problem I have with the vast majority of protein bars today is that at their most base level, they’re deceptive. The bars are put forward as convenient, healthy alternatives to food for “on the go” people. Yet when you take a close look at the ingredients, they’re actually WORSE for you than most candy bars.

Obviously money is the biggest factor…

Companies that use high-quality ingredients in their bars have to charge more for them in order to stay in business. Hence the brick-like slop sold in bar form that you’ll find in the grocery store aisles today.

<FONT="+1">A New Breed of Protein Bar… Raw and Natural

One of my good friends Nick Nilsson, (aka: the Mad Scientist of Bodybuilding) sent me some new protein bars called…

“Dale’s Raw Food Protein Bars” <<--Click Here

The owner of this Renegade Company is Dale Buchanan. His bars are all made from raw, natural, organic ingredients. And let me tell you, these bars taste EXTREMELY good and
the quality of the ingredients is outstanding. For example, here’s what you’ll find in the Raspberry Hazelnut Bars which are one of my favorite flavors:

Organic dates, pea protein, hemp protein, rice protein, almond butter, hazelnuts, coconut nectar, dried raspberries, raw cacao, coconut oil, stevia, and water.

GREAT ingredients… GREAT taste…

They are my new favorite healthy snack!

These bars are even “vegetarian” as well. So if you eat a Raw Food or Vegan Diet these bars are a delicious source of natural protein that you eat.

And here’s the best part…

Right now you can save a HUGE 20% off Dale’s Raw Protein Bars by using coupon code: PROTEINBAR20

So just go to this website:

http://www.DalesProteinBars.com <<--Click Here

Enter Coupon Code: PROTEINBAR20

And you’ll save 20% off your protein bar orders until Feb 29.

Now, remember how I mentioned that companies that use high-quality ingredients have to charge more to stay in business?

That’s the case with these bars. I’ll be the first to admit that at their regular price, they’re not cheap… But when you can get 20% off the normal price of the bars, like you can with this sale, the price is basically the same as the garbage bars that you find at the store.

And THAT is why I highly recommend taking advantage of this offer before the Feb. 29 deadline.

Get delicious healthy protein bars and save 20% at:

http://www.DalesProteinBars.com <<--Click Here

============================

Note:
Due to US Customs Regulations Dale isn’t able to ship these bars outside of the USA because they are classified as “Raw Food”. However, my friend Nick ordered me some of the bars and sent them into Canada for me as a “gift”…

(Nick’s a sneaky guy and I’m glad he did it because these bars are awesome!)

So for USA Orders just click the link below and enter coupon code: PROTEINBAR20

http://www.DalesProteinBars.com

For everyone else…
You’ll need to find a way to “sneak” them in, maybe get a friend who lives in the USA to order them for you and re-send them as a “gift”. That’s how I do it, granted it’s a bit inconvenient but these delicious and healthy protein bars are worth it!

Burger and fries, fish and chips, etc. French Fries are the staple side dish at the greasy spoon diner and fast food joints.

Now the way most places cook them they are deep fried, loaded with fat, and not very healthy. But I’ve got a nice tasty alternative to French Fries that are not only Low In Fat, but they are also Low In Carbs as well!

Just check out the video below for all the details…

Would you like to get more healthy recipes like this?
Just download a copy of The Anabolic Cooking Cook Book at:

Here’s the Low Carb / Low Fat French Fries cooking instructions…

This is a very simple low carb / low fat alternative to french fries and they taste delicious. All you need is some Turnip Sticks (aka: rutabaga).

Now if your local grocery store doesn’t sell these already cut up, you can use a whole turnip and cut them up yourself into chips or wedges.

1) Simply spray the a baking sheet with some PAM and spread the turnip fries out on the baking sheet. I like to cover the sheet with tin foil first to make clean up easier.

2) Add seasoning and spices to taste, and bake them for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees. The actual cooking time will vary depending on how thick the fries are cut.

3) Turn the fries over after 10 minutes in order to evenly cook both sides.

That’s it, tasty low fat, low carb french fries!

To give you an idea of the nutritional difference:
- Potatoes have 5.5 grams of carbs per ounce.
- Turnips only have 1.8 grams of carbs per ounce.

So you are only getting 1/3 of the carbs compared to making home made fries with potatoes. And because we are baking them, not frying them they are virtually fat free. All you are getting is the trace amounts of fat from the PAM spray.

Give this recipe a try, I’m sure you’ll enjoy these as a nice side dish to go along with any meal.

Here’s what you need:

- 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts. (6 oz. / 170 g each)
- 1/4 cup / 60 ml of oat bran
- 1/4 cup / 60 ml of wheat germ
- 1 Tbsp / 15 ml coarsely ground flaxseed
- 1/4 cup / 60 ml coarsely ground almonds
- 1/2 tsp / 2 1/2 ml sea salt
- 1/2 tsp / 2 1/2 ml white pepper
- Pinch garlic powder
- 1/2 cup / 120 ml water or low-sodium chicken broth
- 1 large egg white, lightly beaten

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare baking sheet by lining with parchment paper or coating lightly with olive oil.

2. Cut chicken breasts into nugget-sized pieces, about 1.5 inches square. Set aside.

3. Next, combine all dry ingredients in a large container with a tightly fitting lid. Shake well. This is your coating mixture.

4. Combine water and egg in a medium bowl. Dip each piece in the water/egg-white mixture. Then dip each piece in the coating mixture. Make sure each piece is well coated.

5. Place on the baking sheet. When all of your chicken has been coated and your baking sheet is full, place in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Yesterday (Oct. 4) was my birthday and I turned 33 years young… Now normally when your birthday rolls around you’ll enjoy a nice dinner and indulge in some birthday cake as well.

But this time around I’m in the middle of a strict low carb pre-contest diet and I’m only 6 weeks out from my next bodybuilding competition. So I didn’t want to blow my diet by eating cake and junk food. However, my girlfriend Trish surprised me with a healthy, low carb, high protein alternative…

High Protein Birthday Cake & Ice Cream!

These tasty treats actually fit in perfectly with a low carb eating plan. You see the “ice cream” is really a high protein smoothie that’s just blended up extra thick so you can eat it with a spoon. And the “cake” is a high protein brownie recipe.

There’s no added sugar, starch, etc. in either of these high protein treats so you can enjoy them guilt free, even when following a strict fat loss diet.

I have 2 YouTube videos showing exactly how you can make these delicious healthy recipes posted below:

Eating tasty foods like this sure makes following a low carb diet so much easier. It almost feels like you are “cheating” even though these foods actually help to support fat loss AND muscle growth!

So give’em a try and then leave me a comment below letting me know how you like them…

When it comes to following a good bodybuilding diet plan the Number #1 thing that you need to focus on is meeting your protein intake. You need to consume a minimum of 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily in order to build muscle. So if you weigh 175 pounds, you need to eat at least 175 grams of protein each and everyday (which is quite a lot).

Unfortunately high quality protein foods are also some of the most expensive foods in the grocery store. Things such as lean cuts of meat, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, dairy, etc. can really add up. Especially when consumed in the amounts needed for a good muscle building diet.

Now there are several ways that you can be a savvy shopper and save money on your protein foods. But one of cheapest ways to get a lot of protein is to go get it yourself.

Saving Money On Protein…

This past weekend I went out in search of some high quality protein with my dad and my uncle and we were quite successful! We went out Cod Fishing in my home province of Newfoundland and brought in a good catch.

Cod is a white fish and is a great source of lean protein. In the grocery store Cod sells for about $7 a pound, it’s one of the more expensive fish.

Over the course of our 2 day fishing trip we caught a total of 21 Cod fish. Now I never weighed them all out, but let’s just say it’s enough to stock a freezer with fish for a while.

And besides getting a good stock of protein food, the fishing trip was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to spend some quality time with my dad and uncle…

If you are an outdoors man yourself who likes to fish and hunt then you are already familiar with what a great source of quality protein you can get from these activities.

But Fishing Can Be Expensive…

If you are NOT into fishing and hunting and you try to jump into it just for the sake of saving money on protein… It isn’t going to pan out too well. The start up costs can really add up.

When it comes to fishing; if you had to go out and buy a boat, motor, fishing gear, etc. then that would cost a heck of a lot more than any savings that you would get from catching your own fish. In this case you would be better off buying your fish at the grocery store.

However, you probably know some people personally (i.e. family, friends, co-workers, etc.) who are outdoors men and who are into such activities. In cases like this just ask them about their past fishing / hunting trips. Every single outdoors man LOVES to tell stories about their adventures. And during the conversation you could mention how you’d like to try this yourself sometime and simply ask them if you could join them on a fishing / hunting trip in the future.

Very often they would be happy to have the company and an extra hand helping out. So you could tag along with them and borrow their supplies. That’s exactly what my dad and I did this past weekend. We went along with my uncle, who is a fisherman, and we used his fishing gear.

My uncle goes out fishing pretty much everyday of the fishing season. So he will catch more than enough fish for himself. He’ll keep what he needs and share the rest with family and friends.

So even if you are not interested in going out fishing yourself, you could ask around and you maybe able to get some cheap (or free) fish from local fisherman in your area.

Big Game Hunting…

Another great source of fresh protein is from game hunting. Right now it’s moose hunting season here in Newfoundland. And a moose can easily provide 300-400 pounds of meat. That’s A LOT of meat for a single family, so more often than not people who hunt moose will share the meat with family and friends.

While I don’t hunt moose myself, I still usually get a small freezer full of moose meat every fall that friends and family will give me.

So again, if you are into hunting then you can stock your freezer full of quality lean protein. And if you are not a hunter, just ask around and you maybe able to find some cheap (or even free) game meat from local hunters in your area.

Conclusion…

The best thing about getting your protein from fishing and hunting is that you are getting the real thing. This is natural food. No added hormones or chemicals like you often get from the synthetic fed farmed fish & meat that’s found in the grocery stores.

So by just asking around and looking outside the box it’s possible to stock your freezer full of lean protein, add some variety to your diet, and save some cash in the process!

And if you happen to be an outdoors man yourself… Please feel free to post a comment below sharing your experiences (i.e. the types of fish and game you get, etc.)
Heck, you can even share your “Biggest Fish Story” if you like…

Once you start living a healthy bodybuilding lifestyle and consuming more high quality nutritious foods, you’re going to run into one problem… Your grocery bill goes up!

Unfortunately, following a healthy muscle building diet is a heck of a lot more expensive than eating an “average” diet that’s based mostly around processed foods. The higher costs of quality meats, fish, poultry, fruits, and vegetables certainly has an impact on ones ability to stick to with a solid bodybuilding eating plan. Especially if you are on a limited budget.

One of the more expensive bodybuilding foods is protein, especially lean red meat. And for a serious bodybuilder lean red meat is a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals. And despite what you may have heard, lean red meat is actually very healthy. When you trim off the excess fat; foods like beef, pork, bison, etc. are on par and sometimes even leaner than poultry.

And I have a simple tip that you can use to Instantly Save 25% Or More the next time you buy meat at the grocery store.

Now I have to tell you up front this tip is so simple that you’ll probably say;
“Duh, that’s just common sense Lee…”
But despite the fact that it’s common sense, you’d be surprised at how many people DON’T follow it.

To give you a real world example of this, I was at the grocery store the other day and they had eye of round beef steaks for $13.99 a kilogram. And an eye of round beef roast was only $8.99 a kilogram. So I literally saved $5 a kilogram (approx. $2 per pound) off my meat simply by cutting the steaks up myself.

It takes about 60 seconds to chop up a roast and make your own steaks, so it’s a simple no brainer money saving tip that you can use for your next BBQ!

One of my favorite things to do on a Saturday night is to kick back, relax, and watch a movie.

The only problem with this is that I very often get the munchies and crave a tasty snack that I can enjoy during the movie. (And just to let you know I get those movie munchies 100% naturally, I don’t smoke weed & get the munchies LOL)

One of the best movie night treats in my opinion is Nacho’s!

However, I have my own special way of making them that actually makes them a healthy, low fat, high protein muscle building meal. Just watch the video below to learn…

When it comes to fat loss, most people “Over Estimate” how hard it will be, yet they “Under Estimate” how long it will take…

If one of your fitness goals is to lose that gut and get visible six-pack abs for the New Year…

You need to start taking action NOW!

But one of the biggest problems that people have when it comes to fat loss is they find it difficult to stay motivated and keep consistent with their program. For the most part it’s not “lack of knowledge” that holds people back from fat loss success.

After all, practically everyone knows what they “NEED To Do” in order to lose fat
(at least enough to get started)…

We all know we need to exercise, we know we need to drink plenty of water, we know we need to avoid processed junk food, and all that basic stuff…

But as basic and simple as this is, most people still don’t do it… Why?

The reason is lack of motivation and momentum…
The hardest step to anything is the first step. Once you get the ball rolling it’s actually quite easy to keep it rolling and build on the momentum.

So how do you start building some serious fat loss momentum and take steps towards getting that ripped “six-pack” ?

Simple, you need to prioritize your first meal of the day. If you get your day started off right by having a healthy nutritious meal, it’s easier to keep that momentum going for the rest of the day.

<a href="http://www.anaboliccooking.net" target=_"blank">

Start Your Day With A…

When you have a healthy breakfast and then follow it up with several healthy meals in a row, it will fuel your body and motivate you to get to the gym and train hard. And after a good day of healthy eating and exercise you’ll also want to get to bed at a decent hour so you can get up and do it again the next day.

But it all starts with the First Meal of the day. If you screw this up and skip breakfast or hit the drive through window for some processed “junk food”, you are going to feel like crap. If you feel like crap it’s easier to blow off the day as a write off and say to yourself:

–>> “I’ll get back on track tomorrow…”

If you mess up a couple days in a row, then you’ll probably end up blowing off the whole week and say to yourself:

–>> “I’ll start back on my diet on Monday…”

This is the trap that many people fall into. Momentum works both ways, if you get the ball rolling in the right direction towards healthy eating and regular exercise you can keep it going. But on the other side of the coin, if you get off track it’s very easy to justify bad decisions and build momentum doing all the wrong things.

So my #1 Fat Loss Tip to help get you on the right track towards getting ripped “Six-Pack” abs is to make sure to start everyday off with a healthy high protein breakfast. This will fire up your metabolism and get the ball rolling for a successful day of diet and exercise.

And if you are looking for a delicious meal idea for a healthy high protein breakfast, why not give the following recipe a try tomorrow morning…

The thing that I like the most about this recipe is that it’s a quick and nutritious high protein snack that you can take with you anywhere. Just put a couple of these tasty protein packed muffins in a zip lock bag and you’re good to go!

I’ve posted a screen cap of the recipe below, it is taken right out of the Breakfast Guide Cookbook (on page 8 to be exact).

Basically all you need for this is:
- 1 cup oat bran
- 1/2 cup flax meal
- 4 scoops protein powder
- 2/3 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 teaspoon stevia
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3 egg whites
- 1 teaspoon maple extract
- 2/3 cup water

Now I made a couple minor adjustments to this recipe. In place of 3 egg whites, I used 2 whole eggs. Yes, using whole eggs will bump up the fat and calorie content a bit, but I find the egg yolks make baked goods (like muffins) more moist and tasty.

Also, in place of maple extract I used a couple tablespoonfuls of sugar free maple syrup instead
(simply because I never had any maple extract on hand).

The actual cooking is pretty simple, just mix all the ingredients together in a big mixing bowl, spoon the mixture into a muffin pan sprayed with PAM cooking spray, and then bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

That’s it, pretty straight forward… Even a “Muscle Head” like myself can make it…

Give this High Protein Blueberry Muffin Recipe a try and then leave me a comment below letting me know how you like it. And if you’d like to get another 249 killer muscle building and fat burning recipes like this one, just head on over to Dave’s website www.MetabolicCookingProgram.com.

I’m writing to you today from Miami Beach. I’m here with my girlfriend Trish and our friends Dave “The Muscle Cook” Ruel and his girlfriend Karine. We’ve been traveling all over Florida for the past week and a half.

Now while it has been an absolute blast and we’ve had lots of fun, it can be quite challenging trying to stick to a sensible eating plan when you are away from your home base. So in this blog post I’m going to share some eating tips that we’ve been using to help minimize the damage of eating while traveling.

Prepare Your Own Food… (if you can)

If at all possible I’d recommend staying in a hotel that has an efficiency unit (i.e. mini kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, etc.) This is what we did during the first week of our trip and it allowed up to buy our own food and prepare it the same as if we were home. Plus it saves you a ton of money from having to eat out for every meal.

Staying at a hotel with an efficiency unit makes eating healthy while traveling super easy!

Now obviously staying in an efficiency unit isn’t always possible when traveling. And there will be times when you want to go out to a restaurant and enjoy a good meal. So here are some tips you can use for those situations…

Pig Out In Moderation…

First off, it’s totally cool to “occasionally” let yourself go and literally pig out and and eat whatever you want. Heck I’ll admit that I’ve done it on numerous occasions. I’m not one of those stuck up health gurus who pretends to eat perfect all the time. I love to indulge in a good meal. But the key is to keep those crazy indulgences down to once a week.

Now for those times when you are forced to eat out for several days in a row (as you often are when traveling) you have to use a bit of planning and strategy or else you’ll end up bulking up in all the wrong places

Eat Your Veggies…

One of the things I like to do is start each meal with a large garden salad. This way you get get some fresh veggies in your meal and pre-fill your belly before the main course arrives.
(Note: ask for the salad dressing on the side and use it in moderation.)

Now I know some of you are probably saying:
“But Lee, I don’t like to eat vegetables…”
And my response to that is Man Up & Eat Them!

One thing you’ll find with eating veggies is that the more you eat them, the more you’ll like them. It just takes a little bit of will power to get the ball rolling. I personally love eating salads and I strive to eat at least 1 garden salad every single day.

Start Your Meal With A Garden Salad

Eat REAL FOOD… Not Processed Crap…

When you order your main course try to order “Real Food” and what I mean by that is food that is as close to it’s natural state as possible. Heavily processed foods and deep fried foods are just stripped of their nutrients and loaded up with empty unhealthy calories.

To give you some ideas of Real Food meals last night I had Asian stir-fried shrimp and vegetables served over rice. The night before I had steak and lobster with steamed asparagus and a baked potato. The night before that I had a grilled grouper sandwich on whole wheat bread.

Try your best to order natural foods that are grilled, baked, or stir-fried rather than deep fried. This will go a long way towards keeping your meals healthy and nutritious.

A healthy & Delicious High Protein Meal!

Try to avoid foods that are cooked in thick sauces and gravy as this will sky rocket the fat, sugar, and calorie content of your meal. It’s best to ask for sauces and toppings on the side so you can use them in moderation.

Pack Your Protein Powder & Snacks…

Another tip that I like to use when traveling is to make sure to pack your protein powder and a shaker cup. This way you can keep up with a high meal frequency without having to go to a restaurant for every single meal / snack.

As I write this I’m sitting in the hotel and I’ve got a 2 pound container of Blue Star Iso-Smooth Whey, a bag of apples, and some a raw almonds sitting on the table in front of me. They make for perfect healthy snacks. You can pack these things with you when you leave or just buy them while you are on the road.

Now I’ll be the first to admit that it is very difficult to eat well when traveling. But following these simple tips here can go a long way in helping you stick to a sensible muscle building diet plan until you get back to your home base.

But regardless of the fish (or lack there of) it was an awesome day. Fishing in the winter in Florida is just as warm as fishing in the summer back home in Newfoundland so I really enjoyed it.

Later that night we all went back to Elliott Hulse’s place for a BBQ and Eric Wong made his “Secret Chinese Recipe” that was passed down through the generations by his great, great, great grandfather from deep in the Chinese mountains LOL

Anyway, just check out the video below to see some highlights of our fishing trip adventure and to get Eric’s secret recipe. It made for a very delicious meal that was healthy and super easy to prepare!

When it comes to building a lean muscular physique there are times when you need to tip the scales in favor of building maximum muscle mass. And other times when you need to change focus and tip the scales in favor of burning maximum bodyfat.

It’s a delicate balance, but when done properly the end result is a BIGGER & LEANER physique.
(Which is what we are all striving for.)

As for tipping the scales in favor of maximum fat burning, one of the best approaches is following a “Low Carb” diet plan.

However, the thought of eating low carbs is one that scares many people. They fear that they’ll lose all their hard earned muscle, have low energy, and just feel like a piece of crap…

But this is just not the case. In fact there was a study done by Australian researchers with 60 overweight people. The subjects were divided into 2 groups. Half were following the typical high carb / low fat eating plan. And the other half followed a low carb / high fat eating plan. The interesting thing was that the test subjects ability to exercise, energy levels, perceptions of fatigue and exertion – were consistent for both groups.

However, the big difference was that the low carb group lost more weight and burned a higher percentage of bodyfat during exercise than the high carb group.

When I’m training for a bodybuilding competition and maximum fat loss is my main goal, I follow a low carb diet plan and it works really well. Now the key point here is that I said “Low Carb” not “NO Carb”. There is a huge difference.

The Atkins diet and other similar type diet plans generally recommend drastically cutting carbs to virtually zero. They even go to the point of dropping healthy carbs like vegetables in order to get your carbohydrate intake down as low as possible. It’s this ridiculous approach to cutting carbs that often leaves people feeling low energy, constipated, and just down right miserable when following such a drastic diet plan.

However, I DO NOT do this when I’m following a low carb eating plan.
My version of a low carb diet plan consists of:

Lots of lean protein foods such as; poultry, fish, beef, eggs, and protein supplements.

Lots of veggies such as; fresh garden salads, broccoli, celery, spinach, lettuce, cucumber, cauliflower, zucchini, mushrooms, onions, peas, carrots, bean sprouts, etc.

I also include moderate amounts of healthy fats in the form of almonds, olives, fish oil, flax seed oil, natural peanut butter, almond butter, etc.

The key trick that allows me to stick to such a diet plan, satisfy my appetite, and maintain my energy levels is consuming high amounts of veggies.

Veggies are pure sources of nutrition. They are loaded with phytonutrients such as chlorophyll, polyphenols, carotenoids and other antioxidants help protect and nourish the body. By filling up on veggies you are getting all the good stuff you need, without all the empty calories that are often associated with typical high carbohydrate foods. When it comes to veggies the more the better. After all nobody ever got fat from eating veggies.

A little trick that I use to help me consume veggies with every single meal is to combine them with healthy fats. So I’ll keep a big veggie tray in my refrigerator consisting of chopped broccoli, celery sticks, carrot sticks, etc. and I’ll dip these veggies in natural peanut butter or natural almond butter and chomp away. The peanut butter / almond butter makes the veggies taste better and it also satisfies my appetite more and fills me up.

So even if you don’t have time to sit down to the table for a full meal, you could simply have some chopped veggies dipped in natural peanut butter, and wash it all down with a protein shake. Presto! a super quick, high nutrient, healthy low carb meal / snack.

Another trick that I use when trying to sneak extra veggies in my diet is to use blender smoothies. You are probably familiar with mixing up things like protein shakes and frozen berries in the blender now. But what you could use in place of the frozen berries, is add in frozen vegetables.

I know it probably sounds gross, but it’s not. The protein powder masks the taste of the veggies and it’s actually pretty good. You could even add in some artificial sweeteners like stevia if you want to make it taste a little sweeter.

The secret to successfully following any diet plan is enjoying the foods you eat. No one can stick to an eating plan if they have to force down foods they don’t like. However, if you get creative and find ways to make healthy eating more enjoyable, you’ll be able to stick to an eating plan over the long term and actually reap the results you are looking for.

In my Extreme Fat Loss DVD Program I cover in detail the exact meal by meal low carb diet plan that both myself and my girlfriend Patricia followed while training for the Atlantic Canadian Bodybuilding & Figure Championships earlier this year. It was following this kind of low starchy carb – high veggie eating plan that allowed us to come into the show absolutely shredded in our best shape ever!

This past weekend while I was kicking back on the couch and flipping through the channels on the TV I happened to see an advertisement for the KFC Double Down. Now I have to admit this unique fast food item caught my attention and fired up my appetite…

KFC Double Down – (Now Available In Canada!)

To Quote KFC’s website…

This one-of-a-kind sandwich features two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken filets, two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. This product is so meaty, there’s no room for a bun!

Now if you live in North America chances are that you have also seen this ad before on TV. And who knows, maybe you’ve even indulged in one of these tasty meaty chicken sandwiches yourself…
After all, I think we can all agree that this does look pretty damn good!

After seeing this ad several times, the image of mouth watering crispy chicken, bacon, and cheese was stuck in my brain and I was running out of will power to turn down such a delicious treat…

I was about to throw in the towel, break down, and jump in my car and head on over to KFC…
But then I remembered that my buddy Dave Ruel had a killer Low Fat Crispy Chicken Nugget Recipe in his Anabolic Cooking Cookbook.

So this got my creative juices flowing…
Could I make a “Healthy” Version of KFC’s Double Down?

One that tasted just as good as the Colonel’s “Secret” Recipe, but wasn’t loaded with artery clogging grease and saturated fat.

The answer is YES! I could make a “Healthy” Version…
All I had to do was modify Dave’s Low Fat Crispy Chicken Nugget Recipe and use whole chicken breasts instead.

So in place of the greasy deep fried chicken breasts,
I made my own home made “Baked Crispy Chicken Breasts” using Dave’s recipe.

In place of the fatty bacon strips,
I used low fat turkey bacon.

In place of the regular cheese,
I used fat free cheese slices.

In place of the Colonel’s “Secret” Sauce,
I used low fat mayo and BBQ sauce.

I have to admit that this turned out even better than I expected.
It made for one Delicious Protein Packed, Low Fat, Healthy Muscle Building Meal.

You can compare the nutritional info below for yourself:

KFC’s Double Down

- 32 grams of fat
- 11 grams of carbs
- 53 grams of protein

Lee’s “Healthy” Double Down

- 13 grams of fat
- 11 grams of carbs
- 64 grams of protein

Because my version uses baked crispy chicken it has less than half the fat. And by using turkey bacon and fat free cheese it cuts the fat even more and bumps up the protein content!

I highly recommend you give this High Protein Muscle Building Double Down recipe a try for yourself. And please leave me a comment below letting me know how you like it.

“…I go to the gym regularly and I train hard,
but I am not getting any bigger… Why…?”

I get asked this question A LOT by both guys and gals who are desperately trying to put some solid muscle mass on their bones.

Your diet is one of the most critical aspects of gaining muscular bodyweight. You can have your training routine down pat, but if your diet doesn’t meet your nutritional needs you will NOT get bigger, regardless of how hard you train in the gym.

Most people who call themselves “hard gainers” are usually just under eaters. A lot of folks will skip breakfast, have a small lunch or snack during the day, then pig out and stuff themselves at dinner and think that they are eating a lot.

But to gain size you need to eat every 2-3 hours in order to provide your body with a steady supply of nutrients from which to grow from. If you let yourself go 4 hours of more without eating then you are putting your body into a catabolic state and losing precious muscle tissue.

There are many different formulas you can use to determine how many calories you need to eat each day. But the quickest and easiest way to guesstimate how much you should be eating is to simply take your total current body weight and multiply it by the following:

For Fat loss = eat 12 calories per pound of bodyweight

For Maintenance = eat 15 calories per pound of bodyweight

For Weight Gain = eat 19 calories per pound of bodyweight

This is a very easy way to estimate caloric needs. However, there are obvious drawbacks to this method because it doesn’t take into account your activity levels or body composition. But it will put you in the ballpark and you can adjust your caloric intake up or down as needed based on your progress.

A good nutrient break down for gaining muscular bodyweight is 35% protein, 45% carbohydrates, and 20% fat.

Note: each gram of protein has 4 calories, each gram of carbohydrate has 4 calories, and each gram of fat has 9 calories.

The whole idea of eating 6 well balanced meals per day is by no means a new concept. Most of the coaching students that I work with usually already have a good idea of how they should be eating. But their main excuse is they don’t have the time to eat properly. So below I’ve outlined a few time saving eating tips that you can use to help make eating a healthy muscle building diet simple and easy.

When you cook your food, cook up large quantities so you’ll have left overs. This saves time and makes it easier to have quick nutritious meals on hand. I’ll often grill several steaks at a time, cook several chicken breasts at a time, bake several potatoes at a time, cook up a large pot of rice, etc.

A George Foreman grill (or similar type of grill) is awesome for fast cooking. Because you are cooking food from the top and the bottom the cooking time is literally cut in half!

A frozen chicken breast can be cooked and ready to eat in just 10 minutes. While you are eating your breakfast each morning you could have your chicken breasts cooked on the grill for meals later in the day.

Potatoes, yams, etc. can be cooked within 10 minutes in the microwave.

Bags of pre-made salad, spinach, bags of chopped frozen veggies, etc. are a quick way to add healthy veggies to your diet. Fresh fruit like bananas, apples, oranges, etc. are easy to pack with lunches.

An easy to make breakfast favorite of mine; is to cook up some instant oatmeal, stir in a couple scoops of vanilla protein powder, add some apple sauce, top with a dash of cinnamon and some low calorie sweetener. Presto, you’ll have yourself a tasty nutritious breakfast ready to eat in about 5 minutes.

A fast and healthy lunch would be to pack a grilled chicken breast and baked potatoe in a small Tupperware container. Toss in some pre-washed salad veggies, take a piece of fruit, and you’re all set.

Most people usually do not have much of a problem eating well for dinner as this is typically the biggest meal of the day for the average person. Just make sure to have generous portions of protein foods like beef, chicken, turkey, fish, etc. Wholesome complex carbohydrates such as potatoes, yams, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, etc. And also include some green veggies like a garden salad, steamed, or stir fried veggies.

For in between meal snacks and times when you can’t sit down to the table for a formal meal you can still keep a steady supply of protein and nutrients in your system with quick foods like; protein / meal replacement bars, protein / meal replacement drinks, beef jerky, mixed nuts, fresh fruit, cottage cheese, etc.

Now while these tips here can certainly help put you on the right track to building the big athletic muscular physique that you desire, there is still a lot more that goes into proper muscle building nutrition.

So if you would like to get your very own customized muscle building meal plan, one that’s tailor made to your exact nutritional needs and body type, then you should Sign Up for a Customized Diet and Training Program.

They are great for quick convenient meals on the run. You can pack them in your gym bag, in your brief case, travel bag, etc. and always have a high protein meal anywhere you go.

The draw back to these meal replacements is the price, they can run as much as $5 for a single shake. So if you were to consume a couple of these a day the cost can quickly add up.

In this video below I’ll show you how to make a “homemade” alternative that costs less than half the price, and still has all the nutritional benefits and convenience of the more expensive pre-packaged high protein meal replacement shakes.

This is a delicious muscle building meal that I got from the Anabolic Cooking cookbook on page 163.

It’s a very quick and simple high protein, low carb, pancake meal that you can enjoy while training for fat loss or even as part of a lean mass building training phase.

I must have eating a ton of these while dieting for my most recent bodybuilding show. It was awesome to be able to enjoy a tasty and satisfying pancake breakfast while sticking to a low carb fat loss diet!

The recipe is pretty straight forward, all you need is:
- 1 cup of liquid egg whites
- 2 whole eggs
- 2 scoops of banana flavored whey protein

Note: you can buy liquid egg whites in bulk online and save some cash at: http://www.LeeHayward.com/eggwhites

Just mix everything up in a shaker cup and then cook the mixture in a frying pan over medium heat.

This is enough pancake mix to make approx. 6-8 pancakes (depending on how big you make them).

Give this recipe a try and then leave me a comment below letting me know how you liked it.

And if you’d like more delicious muscle building and fat loss meal ideas, be sure to pick up your own copy of Anabolic Cooking – The Bodybuilders Cookbook.

Welcome To The Brand New Total Fitness Bodybuilding Blog!

I’m super pumped to get my new bodybuilding blog up and running. This is really going to help me deliver even more killer muscle building and fat loss advice that will help you take your physique and muscular development to the next level.

There is a lot more “bells” and “whistles” with this newer updated blog compared to my old blog…

Note: I’m still keeping the old blog online as an archive as there is almost 2 years worth of valuable posts at: http://www.LeeHayward.blogspot.com and I certainly don’t want to get rid of it.

So what I need you to do now before you go any further, is to make sure that you have entered your name and e-mail address in the form above and download my FREE Muscle Building Training Course. This will give you the foundational base of training information that you need to get started building your ultimate body. Plus you’ll also get on going muscle building and fat loss training tips from my a few times per week.

Another thing I suggest you do is get yourself set up with a Gravatar (globally recognized avatar) at: http://en.gravatar.com

This will add your face and personality to your comments. It’s always more enjoyable to see another persons face when conversing. It’s not mandatory but I encourage you to do so. You only need to set this up once which is great because if you post on other blogs or forums on the Internet, many of these websites will recognize your Gravatar.

I really encourage you to share your feedback with me by leaving your comments to the blog posts. This allows you to become part of the Total Fitness Bodybuilding community and it gives me valuable feedback and direction as to what things we should focus on and where we can improve the website in the future.
